Grace Fellowship Church — Capital Region, New York

Portrait of Pastor John Barry

Having served at Grace Fellowship for many years, John Barry remains deeply committed to walking alongside this congregation in faith.

Beyond Sunday services and the day-to-day work of leading a parish, John has a heart for digital ministry — using the online space to connect with, encourage and reach believers wherever they are. It is why this church streams its services, why the sermon archive is free, and why he answers messages from people he has never met.

His preaching works through books of the Bible a chapter at a time rather than jumping between topics. He would rather a congregation learn to read scripture for themselves than depend on him to hand it over pre-digested.

In his own words

A church is not a building or a broadcast. It is the people who keep showing up for each other on the ordinary weeks, when nothing dramatic is happening and nobody is watching. Pastor John Barry

John's convictions about ministry are unglamorous and consistent: preach the text, visit the sick, be reachable, and let the church's generosity be visible in the community rather than in its own budget.

Family and life outside the pulpit

John and his wife have shared this ministry for decades. Much of the pastoral care in this church has happened at their kitchen table, over meals nobody was billed for.

Away from church he is a reader, a traveller, and — by his own admission — far too interested in whatever new tool might help the church reach one more person.
